Sound System: Full

The Discovery Stage at Jack Solomons Club is the first grassroots live music venue in Europe to be certified by Yamaha Sound xR. The platform combines Active Field Control for acoustic enhancement with object-based 3D imaging, placing instruments and voices precisely within the room using technologies developed by Yamaha, NEXO and Steinberg. Where a conventional PA projects sound from the front, Sound xR places instruments and voices in three dimensions. For artists, the result is a more honest, connected mix. For audiences, it lands immediately. It doesn't sound bigger. It sounds real.

Building Premise
Few places in the world have launched more musical careers than Soho. Not from arenas or concert halls, but from basements. Small rooms where musicians stand close enough to see the audience breathe.
Club Eleven (1948 to 1950)
In December 1948, a group of young musicians opened a cooperative club in the basement of 41 Great Windmill Street. They called it Club Eleven. Two house bands took turns on the stage, one led by Ronnie Scott, the other by John Dankworth. This was the first place in Britain where audiences could hear bebop played live. The UK National Jazz Archive has called it one of the most important milestones in the development of modern jazz in post-war Britain.
Club Eleven was where we learnt how to play properly. We were discovering the music as we went along.
Ronnie Scott
We started Club Eleven simply because we wanted somewhere to play modern jazz.
John Dankworth
I can never recall such a sense of evil excitement in a club.
Tony Hall, Disc Newspaper, 1950
Jack Solomons
Legendary boxing promoter Jack Solomons established his gym upstairs. He promoted 26 world title fights, including the 1963 bout between Cassius Clay and Henry Cooper. He was working almost up to his death in 1979. The boxing ring is gone. His name remains above the door.
The Scene Club (1963 to 1966)
The basement reopened as The Scene. Resident DJ Guy Stevens played imported soul, R&B and blues that most of London had never heard. Stax singles. Chess recordings. Motown before it was Motown. The Rolling Stones and The Who played here during their early London club years. Georgie Fame held a weekly Friday residency from August 1963.
It was a focal point for the mod movement. I don't think anyone who was a mod outside Soho realised the fashions and dances all began there. The Scene was really where it was at.
Pete Townshend
The Scene wasn't just a club. It was where the new sound arrived first.
Guy Stevens
The Scene Club was red hot, the hottest little club in London, and in 1963 London was the centre of the world, even if the rest of the world didn't know it quite yet.
Norman Jopling, Record Mirror, 1963
London Calling
Guy Stevens was later recruited by The Clash to produce London Calling, released 14 December 1979. They chose him because he had taken unknown sounds and put them in front of an audience ready to hear them.
Stevens was really important, and he helped create a very positive atmosphere at 41, even though he was a little crazy!
Paul Simonon, The Clash
Custodians Lineage
Scott. Solomons. Stevens. Power. Four custodians of 41 Great Windmill Street, each discovering the next.
Rupert Power
Rupert is the current owner of Sophie's Steakhouse and Jack Solomons Club, inviting Soho Live Studios co-founders George Hudson and Nathan Britton to introduce the next generation of live music explorers to the historic venue.
Co-Founder Quotes
Nowhere turns the unknown into the extraordinary like Soho. Centuries of creative collision. We're just lucky enough to be in the room when it happens.
George Hudson, Co-founder
The quality of musicianship on these stages would hold its own anywhere in the world. The fact that it happens in rooms of ninety people is what makes it special.
Nathan Britton, Co-founder
