Giants of Bebop: Arran Kent
Alfie's Jazz Club10–10:45pm
This show is on both passes.
Arran Kent carries the Giants of Bebop torch on Friday night: tenor out front, the language of Parker and Monk played at speed and with real conviction rather than as a museum exercise. Alfie's Jazz Club is the natural home for it — a room built for straight-ahead jazz played close to the audience, no separation between the stage and the tables. As one of the newer names keeping this repertoire alive on the London scene, Kent is exactly what Soho Jazz Festival's Giants of Bebop strand was built to showcase: the standards, played by someone still making their name on them.
The headline slot of the night, doors from 19:30 to 20:00.
Perched above the bustle of Greek Street, Alfie’s Soho is a private members’ jazz bar hidden in plain sight. Inside, it’s candlelight, curated art, and a grand piano that rarely stays silent. Signature cocktails, including the Soho Vodka Martini, accompany performances from some of Europe’s finest jazz musicians.
Membership or advance reservation only, never walk-in. It does not operate as a restaurant.
A salute to the greats, played by the new: the standards and the language of Parker, Gillespie and Monk, carried by players making their name now. Bebop has Soho in its bones.
