Katy Baker leads with the voice, and Legendary Voices is built for exactly that: standards from the Soho Songbook, sung with the phrasing and restraint the golden age of vocal jazz demands rather than showing off around it. It's one of the Soho Jazz Festival bookings that rewards close listening — a small band behind her doing just enough to hold the tune in place while she does the real work of shaping it, line by line. On Archer Street, in a room built for exactly this kind of set, expect the songbook treated with real care rather than nostalgia alone.
