Dorance Lorza is a Colombian vibraphonist, arranger and bandleader from Cali who has anchored the London salsa scene since 1996 with his group Sexteto Cafe. Before moving to the UK he built a serious reputation at home, working with major Colombian salsa names including Los Niches, Los Del Caney, Los Titanes and Fruko y su Orquesta. With Sexteto Cafe he led the revival of the salsa con vibes sound, favouring the tight combo approach of the Joe Cuba Sextet over big brass orchestras. The band won Latin Act of the Year at the 2014 LUKAS Awards and Dorance took Musician of the Year in 2015. Nine albums span Cafe Salsa (1997) to Circles of Time (2022), with tracks licensed to The Rough Guide To Salsa Dance. The band appears regularly at UK jazz festivals and salsa congresses, including the London Latin Jazz Festival in Soho, and the city of Cali has formally recognised Dorance for his contribution to salsa heritage.
