Tonight the trumpet arrives from New York: Mejedi Owusu, the Suffolk raised, Juilliard trained twenty year old whose horn is already booked at Smalls and Dizzy's, plays the hidden jazz den inside Jack Solomons. Two shows, 6:30 PM and 8:30 PM, cocktails at the kiosk from 6:00 PM, and a couple of dozen seats between you and a player the other side of the Atlantic is busy claiming. Book the early house and stay for the late one.
The Music
Mejedi Owusu grew up in Suffolk, trained at Trinity Laban and now studies at Juilliard in New York, where the bandstands have taken notice: Smalls, Dizzy's Club and Zinc Bar already put his name on their bills, and he has played alongside Emmet Cohen and Steve Nelson. The critic Richard Williams caught his quintet in London and wrote that as they tore into his original Paranoia, every ear in the place was pinned back. His sound folds gospel and West African tradition into hard swinging jazz. He is twenty.
This is discovery at Piano Bar range. Owusu spent July touring the north of England to glowing reviews, firing from the lip with endless invention as one had it, and August brings him to Great Windmill Street before New York reclaims him. Expect originals alongside the standards, a horn with old school warmth and young lungs, and the particular pleasure of hearing a future name in a room this size. The Soho Live Studios producers book players like this on conviction.
