The Night
Cocktail Swing does what the name promises: a Soho jazz star swings the standards in the hidden jazz den inside Jack Solomons while the kiosk shakes and stirs. Two shows, 6:30 PM and 8:30 PM, cocktails from 6:00 PM. Thursday here is the warm up the weekend wishes it was. Candlelight, close tables, and swing at the tempo a good cocktail deserves.
The Music
The deal is the same as ever at the Piano Bar, only the name is missing: a player off the Club's roster, picked by the Soho Live Studios producers, working the swing end of the songbook at close range. Some weeks it is a pianist, some weeks a voice with a trio behind it. The room seats a couple of dozen, the sound carries without help, and a hidden jazz den is exactly where surprises belong. The regulars stopped asking who is playing a long time ago. They just book.
Expect swing done for drinkers: Nat Cole tempos, Basie punchlines, the songbook's most cocktail compatible corners, played by someone who knows the difference between background music and a low lit show. This is the Club's whole argument in miniature, unbelievable talent at arm's length, even when the bill keeps its secrets. The early show pairs with the first martini, the late one with the second. Whoever it is will have played rooms far bigger than this one. That is rather the point.
