The Night
Two instruments and a century of songs: Honey Boulton brings voice and guitar, Matyas Gayer brings the piano, and the hidden jazz den inside Jack Solomons gets the duo treatment. Two shows, 6:30 PM and 8:30 PM, cocktails at the kiosk from 6:00 PM. Hot jazz warmth meets trio school elegance, close enough to hear the wood of both instruments. Thursday plays it intimate this week.
The Music
Honey Boulton is the Wellington born guitarist, banjo player and singer who writes 1920s hot jazz like he was there, four albums deep and a regular in this room. Matyas Gayer is the Hungarian pianist Jazzwise picked out for its Taking Off column: Graz and Vienna trained, twice a Montreux piano competition finalist, and leader of a trio whose album Westbourne Park was cut with Dave Green and Steve Brown. Ubuntu Music calls him one of a handful of young pianists forging his own distinctive style. Together they meet in the middle of the songbook.
Voice and piano is jazz at its most honest: two musicians listening hard, in a room close enough to hear the thinking. Expect the swing era with fresh ears, Boulton originals in the old style, Gayer's touch on the standards, and the kind of interplay duo nights are booked for. The candles do the lighting, the kiosk does the cocktails, and Thursday does what Thursday does best at the Piano Bar: turns a school night into a secret worth keeping.
