Standards by candlelight closes the working week the Soho way: Alex Bryson at the keys in the hidden jazz den inside Jack Solomons, the songbook out, the kiosk pouring from 6:00 PM. Two shows, 6:30 PM and 8:30 PM, a couple of dozen seats and a Friday crowd that came to sit close. Bryson's on the bill now; the standards never left.
The Music
Friday hands the piano to Alex Bryson, singer, pianist and songwriter, and the setlist runs the hundred year catalogue and his own: Gershwin, Porter, Berlin, Ellington, alongside originals steeped in the same songbook tradition, romantic misadventures told with humour and a straight face. Played this close, a standard stops being background and starts being the point. Trust the room, and the room delivers, and Fridays deliver loudest.
By candlelight is more than set dressing in this room, it is the whole staging: low light, close tables, cocktails that arrive with ceremony, and Bryson at the keys knowing the songbook's every shortcut.
