The Night
The Latin Session turns Friday at the Piano Bar into the warmest room in Soho: Pablo Barrios at the grand, salsa and son at close quarters, and cocktails doing exactly what cocktails were invented for. The hidden jazz den inside Jack Solomons runs two shows, 6:30 PM and 8:30 PM, with the kiosk pouring from 6:00 PM. Thursday's La Fiesta is the party; Friday is the later, looser, closer version. Come to both and call it a weekend.
The Music
Pablo Barrios brings Caracas to the keys: a Venezuelan pianist and composer out of the Royal College of Music, mentored by Mark-Anthony Turnage, now musical director of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra's Latin Collective. He has played Westminster Abbey and the EFG London Jazz Festival, and the Club keeps bringing him back because Latin jazz this alive is rare at any distance, never mind arm's length. Alma Llanera, his firework reading of Venezuela's second national anthem, was filmed live in this exact room. Ask for it. He usually says yes.
The Latin Session leans into the dance floor end of his songbook: son montuno, salsa, Afro-Cuban rhythm and the standards given a clave transplant. In a room that seats a couple of dozen, the rhythm is not something you watch, it is something that happens to you. The early show pairs with cocktail hour, the late one with whatever Friday turns into. His residencies around Soho have made him one of the Club's most requested bookings. Rum cocktails are the house recommendation. The second set is the deep end.
