Tonight the voice fills the room again: Marvin Muoneké returns to Alfie's with his band, bass baritone out front, trumpet never far from reach, the swing era songbook given the full treatment one flight up above Greek Street. The martinis are proper, the piano is a studio grand, and two houses run Friday, 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM, both with a habit of selling through. Wear something good.
The Music
Marvin Muoneké is a bass baritone of Nigerian and Guyanese heritage with a three octave range and, as Jazz Journal put it, low notes that reverberate in your chest cavity. A former National Youth Jazz Orchestra featured vocalist, he sings first and plays trumpet second, self taught, with what the same review called pre bop elegance and lyricism. The Jazz Mann compared him to Gregory Porter and wondered in print why he is not more widely known. Soho gets to enjoy being in on the secret a little longer.
Expect the Great American Songbook with Rat Pack swagger, now with a band to swing it: Mack the Knife, Fly Me to the Moon, the mid century songbook he has carried from The Voice and the Britain's Got Talent semi finals to festival stages across the country, alongside originals from his album The Young Man With The Old Soul. He says jazz comes down to joy, freedom and fun, and with a rhythm section behind him that is exactly how it lands. Two houses, at arm's length from a voice built for rooms ten times this size.
