Tonight the drums lead: Jon Onabowu brings Now's the Time, his debut album, to Alfie's live, contemporary jazz with funk, hip hop and gospel groove in its bloodstream. One flight up above Greek Street, the martinis are proper and the studio grand has company. Two houses, 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM.
The Music
Jon Onabowu is a Nigerian British drummer, composer and bandleader whose CV reads like a festival poster: The Balimaya Project, performances with Venna and Theo Croker, and stages from the EFG London Jazz Festival to Montreux and North Sea Jazz. His improvised music residency, Cosmic Fusion, is three years running at London's most famous jazz club, and this spring he released Now's the Time, ten tracks of live, collaborative energy featuring David Mrakpor of Blue Lab Beats. The Club filmed him at Alfie's last year. He is back with an album's worth of reasons.
Now's the Time live means the album with the lid off: The Bounce, Nights Over London, Phoenix and the rest, stretched the way they were written, in the room, heads nodding. Onabowu writes grooves first and lets the improvisation argue with them, which is exactly the kind of jazz Alfie's serves best at arm's length. Saturday runs two houses, both close, with a rhythm section you will feel through the floor.
