The Night
Friday night at Jack Solomons starts the way the best basement nights do: down the stairs, cocktail in hand, the room already warm. This is the Discovery Stage, the basement at 41 Great Windmill Street where the Club points its regulars at whoever is coming next, and this Friday belongs to Riketté Genesis: swing era jazz with soul underneath. Cocktails at the kiosk from 6:30 PM, show at 8:00 PM. Get down early, settle in properly, and let that voice make the introductions.
The Music
Riketté Genesis grew up in Brixton on reggae and found jazz in her grandmother's Ella Fitzgerald records, and the two have been negotiating in her voice ever since. Eight years and counting with the Soho Live family, she has sung The Jazz Cafe, the Southbank Centre and a festival stage in Lagos, spins vinyl on the side, and made this year's Forbes highlights from the Soho Jazz Festival. On the Discovery Stage she gets the full set treatment: room to stretch, swing to spare, soul when you least expect it.
Soul and Swing is the full set treatment: the gypsy jazz workouts, the torch songs, the Busy Line material and whatever the room asks for nicely, through Europe's first fully immersive Yamaha sound system, which suits a voice that never needed help carrying. Nights like this are the reason Soho Live Studios exists: the artists the Club believes in, played to the people who will say they saw them first.
Riketté brings both authenticity and modern flair to every performance.
