Keys and candlelight, Friday edition: a Soho jazz star takes the grand in the hidden jazz den inside Jack Solomons, with the kiosk pouring from 6:00 PM and the weekend arriving early. Two shows, 6:30 PM and 8:30 PM, a couple of dozen seats close enough to watch the hands. The name lands later; the standard never moves. Book the early house for talk, the late house for the deep cuts.
The Music
A Soho jazz star from the Club's roster holds the piano this Friday, booked by the Soho Live Studios producers while the billing catches up. The songbook is the setlist: Gershwin, Porter, Ellington, the standards that reward a player with proper hands and an audience close enough to notice. Friday gives this room its warmest crowd of the week, candlelight on close tables and cocktails that arrive shaken rather than hurried. Trust the room, and the room delivers.
Fridays at the Piano Bar run on temperature: the early show settles in with the first martini, the late show loosens its tie, and the piano carries both. Expect standards at close range, requests honoured when the mood allows, and the particular pleasure of a room this size doing what it was built for. When the name is announced, the regulars will nod. Until then the piano speaks for itself.
