The speakeasy set: Reiss Ellis-Beckles brings his alto saxophone to the hidden jazz den inside Jack Solomons, where the cocktails are shaken to a rhythm and the horn plays close enough to touch. Two shows, 6:30 PM and 8:30 PM, cocktails at the kiosk from 6:00 PM. A saxophone in a room this size is the oldest Soho trick there is, and Friday is when it works best. Slip in, order well, stay late.
The Music
Reiss Ellis-Beckles is a Trinity Laban graduate who took his alto to New York for a Master's at the Aaron Copland School, studying under Antonio Hart, and came back with the address book to match: Smalls in New York, sold out nights at the Vortex, festival sets from London to Norway. His playing crosses into pop and hip hop when it suits him, with credits alongside Halsey and Jessie J, and he teaches the next generation between gigs.
This is cocktail jazz as the speakeasies intended: standards with the lights low, ballads that pair with the first martini, grooves that pair with the second, and originals like Mourning Love in between. Ellis-Beckles writes as well as he plays and reads a room like a set list. In a couple of dozen seats the alto stops being an instrument and becomes atmosphere. Discovery at Piano Bar range: a player on the way up, at arm's length, while the bigger rooms wait their turn.
