Cocktail swing does what it says: Honey Boulton, guitar, banjo and voice, swings the 1920s songbook while the kiosk shakes the good stuff, in the hidden jazz den inside Jack Solomons. Two shows, 6:30 PM and 8:30 PM, cocktails from 6:00 PM. Hot jazz and cold drinks have been a Soho pairing for a century, and Thursday is when this room does it best. Candles lit, tempo up.
The Music
Honey Boulton writes hot jazz like the 1920s never ended: a Wellington born guitarist, banjo player and singer with four albums of originals in the old style and a London swing scene pedigree that includes a stint at Kansas Smitty's. This room knows him well, and the feeling is mutual: his sets swing between rags, stomps and novelty numbers with a scholar's ear and a performer's grin. When the banjo comes out, scepticism in the room drops sharply. It always does.
Cocktails and swing is the Piano Bar running its oldest play: music with bounce, drinks with backbone, and a couple of dozen seats close enough to watch the fingerpicking. Expect Boulton originals beside the jazz age songbook, tempos that pull the room forward, and the odd tune slow enough to order another round to. The early show warms up, the late show cuts loose. A school night in Soho has rarely been this well spent.
