Standards by candlelight closes the working week the Soho way: a Soho jazz star at the keys in the hidden jazz den inside Jack Solomons, the songbook out, the kiosk pouring from 6:00 PM. Two shows, 6:30 PM and 8:30 PM, a couple of dozen seats and a Friday crowd that came to sit close. The name follows; the standards never left.
The Music
Friday hands the piano to a star from the Club's roster, booked by the Soho Live Studios producers, and the setlist writes itself: Gershwin, Porter, Berlin, Ellington, the hundred year catalogue that keeps this room in business. Played this close, a standard stops being background and starts being the point. Trust the room, and the room delivers, and Fridays deliver loudest.
By candlelight is more than set dressing in this room, it is the whole staging: low light, close tables, cocktails that arrive with ceremony, and a player who knows the songbook's every shortcut.
