The Music
Alto saxophonist Reiss Ellis Beckles brings a Christmas big band to Alfie's.
Reiss has played alongside Halsey, Jessie J and Robin Thicke, shared bandstands with the jazz giants Jimmy Heath and Jon Faddis, and played Smalls in New York after a Master's at Queens College with Antonio Hart. His group's debut album, Worlds Apart, launched at the EFG London Jazz Festival, and he has since taken it to festivals from Manchester to Norway.
For Christmas he goes big: an early house with his quartet, then the full band, with Anthony Marsden singing, Jonathan Bauer on trumpet, Elliot Thomas on tenor, Simon Tate Lovery on trombone, and Rowan Hudson, Tom Riviere and Andrew McCoubrey in the engine room.
The Night
This Christmas, Soho Live Studios puts twelve rising stars of jazz in lights. Soho's City of Stars, a Soho Jazz Festival series, spotlights the artists we believe in most, one night each at Alfie's Jazz Club and the Piano Bar at Jack Solomons, hand-picked for the moment just before everyone else catches on.
Christmas at Alfie's Jazz Club, Greek Street, at full volume: candlelight, a studio grand, a Soho Vodka Martini, and a horn section that fills every corner of the room.
A big band in a small room at Christmas. You won't hear it like this anywhere else.
