Christmas comes to Greek Street early: Reiss Ellis-Beckles brings his alto saxophone to Alfie's for a Saturday Christmas Special, one flight up, candles lit, martinis festive and the studio grand dressed for the season. Two houses, 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM, and December Saturdays here sell through fast. Bring the office party. Leave the paper hats at the door.
The Music
Reiss Ellis-Beckles is a Trinity Laban graduate who took his alto to New York for a Master's at the Aaron Copland School, studying under Antonio Hart, and came back with the address book to match: Smalls in New York, sold out nights at the Vortex, festival sets from London to Norway. His playing crosses into pop and hip hop when it suits him, with credits alongside Halsey and Jessie J.
The Christmas Special is the season's songbook through a saxophone: Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas as a ballad, the Charlie Brown tunes with a swing, and originals like Mourning Love for the moments between. In a room this size the alto stops being an instrument and becomes atmosphere. The early house for mulled spirits, the late house for the party.
