The Music
Detroit saxophonist Houston Patton brings his horn to the Christmas speakeasy.
Houston started out playing gospel in church, swapped a computer science degree for jazz, and came up under the Detroit legend Wendell Harrison. He has played Cliff Bell's and the Dirty Dog Jazz Cafe, played Minton's Playhouse in Harlem where bebop was born, and found his first band in Kevin Jones and Tenth World. His quintet Quintessential released Here We Are, and he calls risk part of the music, right down to going for the high note mid-gig.
The Night
This Christmas, Soho Live Studios puts twelve rising stars of jazz in lights. Soho's City of Stars, a Soho Jazz Festival series, spotlights the artists we believe in most, one night each at Alfie's Jazz Club and the Piano Bar at Jack Solomons, hand-picked for the moment just before everyone else catches on.
A speakeasy for Christmas: the Piano Bar at Jack Solomons, hidden off Great Windmill Street, lit low, the cocktails crafted for the characters of Soho, and a Detroit tenor going for the high notes.
