The Night
The last Friday before Christmas, and Alfie's is dressed for it: bassist Tom Dring brings his trio back to Greek Street to swing the Christmas songbook, one flight up, candles lit and martinis in festive order. Two houses, 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM, and this is the Friday every office party in Soho is trying to book. Get in first.
The Music
Tom Dring is a Derby born double bassist who trained at the Royal Academy of Music and plays in the tradition of Ray Brown and Christian McBride: driving walking bass and melodic soloing. He has worked with Alan Barnes, Gilad Atzmon and Soweto Kinch, played Ronnie Scott's, the Vortex, the 606 and the Barbican, and leads his own trio and sextet.
A bass led piano trio is made for Christmas: the season's songbook swung the way Ray Brown would have wanted, from the carols everyone knows to the festive standards that only get played one month a year, with walking lines like fresh snow underfoot. The early house for the carols, the late house for the party.
