The Koko Collective's founding pianist, famous for his stride and a former Royal Navy officer, brings the songbook into winter: ballads for the first cold nights and a left hand that still swings like it's 1929.
The Music
James Browne opens Soho's City of Stars with the hardest-working left hand in jazz.
The founding pianist of the Koko Collective, the band that grew out of Soho's jazz clubs, James plays stride the way it was born: loud, fast and grinning, the music of 1920s Harlem rent parties brought straight into a Soho December. Before the music took over he was an officer in the Royal Navy, and he still plays with a sailor's swagger.
The Night
This Christmas, Soho Live Studios puts twelve rising stars of jazz in lights. Soho's City of Stars, a Soho Jazz Festival series, spotlights the artists we believe in most, one night each at Alfie's Jazz Club and the Piano Bar at Jack Solomons, hand-picked for the moment just before everyone else catches on.
