Latin jazz in a room this small is a contact sport: montunos at close range, a grand piano played like a drum, and rhythms that make sitting still an achievement. By Thursday the hidden jazz den inside Jack Solomons has warmed up nicely, and tonight the temperature climbs several degrees. Two shows, 6:30 PM and 8:30 PM, cocktails at the kiosk from 6:00 PM. Book the early show for conversation and the late one for a party.
The Music
Pablo Barrios is a Venezuelan born pianist and composer trained at the Royal College of Music, where his mentors included Mark-Anthony Turnage, and now musical director of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra's Latin Collective. His CV runs from Westminster Abbey to the EFG London Jazz Festival, and his calling card is a fierce blend of Afro-Cuban rhythm and contemporary jazz delivered with a percussionist's attack. His showpiece reading of Alma Llanera, Venezuela's second national anthem, turns a folk melody into a firework display, and the Club has the film to prove every word of it.
La Fiesta is Barrios in his element. Son and salsa grooves, Afro-Cuban rhythm, jazz harmony stacked on top, and the occasional ambush: his Latin reading of a certain pop classic has been known to stop the room mid drink. In a space this size you feel the clave through the floorboards. Caracas via Great Windmill Street.
