The Night
Friday night at Jack Solomons goes electronic: Zeñel bring trumpet, drums and live production to the Discovery Stage, jazz improvisation wired through UK garage, grime and jungle. Down the stairs at 41 Great Windmill Street, cocktail in hand, the room already humming. Cocktails at the kiosk from 6:30 PM, show at 8:00 PM. This is the sound of London right now, played by musicians who grew up inside it. Get down early and let the low end introduce itself.
The Music
Zeñel are Laurence Wilkins on trumpet, guitar and electronics and Zoe Pascal on drums, formed when its members met as fourteen year olds in London's young jazz scene and named from its founders' initials. They came up through Jazz re:freshed, whose 5IVE series launched Nubya Garcia, and emerged at the EFG London Jazz Festival while still teenagers. Jazzwise tipped them as ones to watch, and the years since have added the album Extreme Sports and the RUBICON singles, one part carnival, one part jungle. The Jazz Mann put it plainly: outstanding musicians.
The New Sound is the Discovery Stage doing what it says: tomorrow's headliners on a ninety seat stage with Europe's first fully immersive Yamaha sound system, which happens to be the perfect machine for a band that treats the computer as an instrument. Expect garage and jungle rhythms colliding with proper improvisation, club pressure with jazz ears. Artists about to matter, in front of the people who will say they were there first. Ninety seats, one full set, tickets kept low.
