Friday the 13th has never been luckier: bassist Stuart Barker brings his trio back to Alfie's, one flight up above Greek Street, with Harry Ashworth on piano and Alfonso Vitale on drums. Two houses, 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM. Walk under a ladder on the way if you like, the martinis are proper and the music is a safe bet. Fridays here sell through.
The Music
Stu Barker picked up the double bass at fourteen and graduated from Birmingham Conservatoire, with masterclasses from Dave Holland, Jeff Ballard, Mark Turner and John Taylor along the way. He has worked with the Clark Tracey Quintet, leads his own quartet ULV, has supported Laura Mvula, and has played the 606, Ronnie Scott's and the Barbican. His trio played the Soho Jazz Festival.
Harry Ashworth, whose own trio has been a Piano Bar regular since 2023, brings the standards pedigree at the studio grand, and Alfonso Vitale, a regular in Tony Kofi's Portrait of Cannonball quintet, keeps it swinging. Expect a set full of lucky charms: Lucky to Be Me, Just in Time, and whatever else tempts fate. The early house for conversation, the late house for luck.
