The Night
A rare Thursday at Alfie's, and a good reason for it: it is Thanksgiving, and Riketté Genesis is giving thanks the only way a jazz singer should, with the Great American Songbook sung in full, one flight up above Greek Street. Two houses, 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM, martinis in place of pumpkin pie. Americans in London, this one is for you. Everyone else, you are very welcome too.
The Music
Riketté Genesis is Brixton born, found jazz in her grandmother's Ella Fitzgerald records, and sings golden age swing with soul underneath. A member of the Soho Live family for over eight years, she has taken that voice from the Piano Bar to the Southbank Centre and a festival stage in Lagos, and Forbes picked her out among the Soho Jazz Festival's highlights.
The Thanksgiving Songbook is America's gift to the world, sung by one of Soho's favourite voices: Gershwin, Porter, Ellington and Berlin, torch songs and swing, and perhaps a nod to Irving Berlin's I've Got Plenty to Be Thankful For. Julie London, Sarah Vaughan and Ella are the compass points. The early house is the aperitif, the late house the second helping.
