The Friday Fiesta turns Alfie's into the warmest room on Greek Street: Pablo Barrios and his trio at the studio grand, salsa and son at close quarters, and cocktails doing exactly what cocktails were invented for. Two houses, 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM. November outside, Caracas inside. Fridays here have a habit of selling through, so book early and bring someone who dances.
The Music
Pablo Barrios is a Venezuelan pianist and composer out of the Royal College of Music, now musical director of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra's Latin Jazz Collective. He has played Westminster Abbey and the EFG London Jazz Festival, runs A Night in Havana at the Piano Bar, and the Club keeps bringing him back because Latin jazz this alive is rare at any distance, never mind arm's length.
A trio is Barrios at his most agile: son montuno, salsa and Afro-Cuban rhythm with the piano doing the work of a full horn section, and Alma Llanera, filmed live at the Piano Bar, a fair taste of where the night goes. The early house pairs with cocktail hour, the late one with whatever Friday turns into. Rum is the house recommendation.
