The Night
Halloween, one flight up above Greek Street: Katy Baker and her quartet cast the Witchcraft Swing Set over Alfie's, candles low, martinis dark, and the swing era songbook raided for every spell, hex and black magic number it has. Two houses, 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM, and a Saturday this good sells through. Costumes are welcome, not required. A little mischief is.
The Music
Katy Baker trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama and has spent close to two decades running London cabaret from the front: singer, comedian and compère, and one quarter of the 1940s styled vocal group Four Femmes. She has the timing of a comic and the phrasing of a torch singer, which is exactly the combination a Halloween set calls for.
The golden age songbook has never been short of spells, hexes and black magic, and Baker knows exactly where they are buried, with a full quartet to swing them. Expect costumes in the room, patter with a bite, and at least one song you will be humming on the night bus. The early house is for the spooked, the late house for the possessed.
