The Music
Detroit saxophonist Houston Patton brings hard bop and gospel fire to the Piano Bar, with rising London pianist Nnamdi Nnachi-Cole beside him.
Houston learned the horn from his father, a saxophonist, cut his teeth playing gospel in church, and studied with the Detroit saxophone legend Wendell Harrison. He was working the city's top jazz rooms, Cliff Bell's and the Dirty Dog Jazz Cafe, while still at university, and a spell in New York put him on the bandstand at Minton's Playhouse in Harlem, the birthplace of bebop. His debut album as a leader, Here We Are, came out with his quintet Quintessential, and Cannonball Adderley is still one of his favourite saxophonists.
Nnamdi Nnachi-Cole trained at the Julian Joseph Jazz Academy and is one of the young pianists London is talking about: ballads with real depth, and real urgency when the tempo rises.
The Night
Down through Jack Solomons Club to Piano Bar Soho, the hidden jazz den at 41 Great Windmill Street: a speakeasy you have to be told about, lit low, where the band is close enough to share your table. Detroit comes to Soho, with swing from a saxophonist who has already played Minton's and a menu of cocktails, each one crafted for a character of Soho. Ours is the Impresario, a fresh take on an Old Fashioned.
