Sabor Latino brings the heat up one flight of stairs: Pablo Barrios and his quartet take the studio grand at Alfie's for a Saturday of Latin jazz, the clave running under everything and the martinis doing their share of the work. Two houses, 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM, and Saturdays above Greek Street have a habit of selling through. Book the early house to ease in, the late house if you plan on moving in your seat.
The Music
Pablo Barrios brings Caracas to the keys: a Venezuelan pianist and composer trained at the Royal College of Music, now musical director of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra's Latin Jazz Collective, which he led at the EFG London Jazz Festival. He has played Westminster Abbey, runs A Night in Havana at the Piano Bar, and is one of the most requested names in the Soho Live family.
With a full quartet behind him, the Afro-Cuban side of his playing gets room to breathe: son montuno, salsa, bolero and the standards given a clave transplant, with Alma Llanera, his firework reading of Venezuela's unofficial second anthem, never far from the set list. In a room this size the rhythm is not something you watch. It happens to you. Rum is the house recommendation.
