The Night
Soho After Six is the Piano Bar hitting its stride in the middle of the week: a Soho jazz star at the piano, the kiosk pouring from 6:00 PM, two shows at 6:30 PM and 8:30 PM in the hidden jazz den inside Jack Solomons. A couple of dozen seats, all of them close enough to watch the hands. Skip the commute crush, take a corner table, and let Wednesday earn its keep.
The Music
The name on the bill is the Piano Bar itself. A Soho jazz star from the Club's roster takes the piano for the evening, picked by the Soho Live Studios producers, and the songbook does the rest: Gershwin and Porter, Ellington and Arlen, the standards a good player can turn over all night without repeating a trick. Trust the room, and the room delivers. Midweek runs looser than the weekend: more requests, more detours, more room to play.
This room was built for exactly this: a studio piano, cocktails made rather than poured, and a player good enough to book without a poster. Expect the early show bright and the late show looser, requests honoured when the mood allows, and the odd tune played faster than its composer intended. Wednesday in Soho does not need a warm-up act. It needs a corner seat and a first round.
