The Night
Tom Ward brings his Soho Songbook to the Piano Bar this Wednesday: jazz originals and classics with a Soho twist, played at close range in the hidden jazz den inside Jack Solomons. The kiosk pours from 6:00 PM, and two shows run at 6:30 PM and 8:30 PM for a couple of dozen seats. Midweek is when this room is at its most relaxed, and a songbook night suits it perfectly.
The Music
Tom Ward has spent his career at the piano, and the Songbook is where he plays it his way: Gershwin, Porter and Arlen alongside tunes of his own. Club regulars will know it from Alfie's in August. This Wednesday it moves to the Piano Bar, a smaller, lower lit room where every chord reaches the back without any help.
Expect the standards played close enough to watch the voicings, and originals that sit so comfortably beside them you may not always tell which is which. The early show pairs with the first cocktail, the late one runs looser and takes the odd request. Wednesday in Soho, with a player the Club has booked before and is glad to book again.
