The Night
Friday Fever hands the hidden jazz den inside Jack Solomons to Katy Baker this week: swing and cabaret classics, sung with perfect timing, real charm and a wink you can hear. Candlelight, close tables, two shows at 6:30 PM and 8:30 PM, with cocktails at the kiosk from 6:00 PM. She last sang for the Club in August, downstairs on the Discovery Stage. This time the room is smaller and the seats are closer.
The Music
Katy Baker trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama and has spent close to two decades on London's cabaret stages as a singer, comedian and compère. She is also one quarter of the 1940s styled vocal group Four Femmes on the Thames. Swing and cabaret are her home ground, and she can host, land the joke and hold the note, often in the same song.
Expect the golden age songbook with a raised eyebrow: Fitzgerald and Day, Porter and Coward, the tunes that were always meant to be sung with a smile. The patter between numbers earns its place, and in a room this size she will work every table. The early show suits a first cocktail and a catch up. The late show is Friday proper.
