The Night
The Tom Dring Duo returns to the Piano Bar this Wednesday: double bass and piano working through the standards in the hidden jazz den inside Jack Solomons. The kiosk pours from 6:00 PM, with two shows at 6:30 PM and 8:30 PM and a couple of dozen seats close enough to watch the hands. Midweek is when this room is at its calmest, and a duo suits it best.
The Music
Tom Dring trained at the Royal Academy of Music and is known for driving walking lines and melodic soloing in the tradition of Ray Brown and Christian McBride. He has played stages from the Barbican to the O2, shared bandstands with Soweto Kinch, Gilad Atzmon and Jacob Collier, and leads his own Tom Dring Trio and Sextet. A duo strips all of that back to the essentials: bass, piano and the tune.
Expect swing built from the bottom up, with the bass as likely to carry the melody as to hold the pulse, and the piano free to answer back. Club regulars caught Dring in this room in August, and this is the return visit. The early show suits a conversation. The late one suits none at all.
