The Night
The Soho Songbook is Alfie's with the name left deliberately blank: a Soho jazz star, chosen by the Soho Live Studios producers, singing the century's best songs above Greek Street. The martinis are proper, the piano is a studio grand, and two houses run Saturday, 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM. The act stays a surprise until the lights drop. The standard is the house guarantee.
The Music
Every week the producers hand this stage to someone worth dressing up for, and some weeks they keep the name to themselves. That is the game of The Soho Songbook: Gershwin, Porter, Arlen and company, sung by a voice off the Club's own roster in the most intimate headline room the Club runs. Trust the room, and the room delivers. The regulars will tell you the same, usually somewhere around the second chorus, when the surprise stops mattering and the singing takes over.
A songbook show at Alfie's means the classics sung close: an arm's length from the piano, a martini within reach, the tunes your grandparents courted to and the ones Hollywood keeps borrowing. Saturdays here run two houses and both tend to go, name or no name. Come for the mystery, stay because whoever walks on will have earned the stage. And if you guess the booking before the first chorus, the Club would quite like to hire you.
