The Night
The Evening Standards is the Piano Bar's midweek ritual: the American songbook by candlelight, played by a Soho jazz star the producers keep deliberately under wraps. The hidden jazz den inside Jack Solomons seats a couple of dozen, close enough to hear the pedal work. Two shows, 6:30 PM and 8:30 PM, cocktails at the kiosk from 6:00 PM. Midweek is when this room is at its best behaved and least crowded. Take the hint.
The Music
Some nights the Club names the act. Some nights it names the standard instead. The Evening Standards puts the songbook first, Gershwin, Porter, Berlin and company, trust the room, and the room delivers. The roster behind this stage runs deep, and midweek is when its regulars stretch out, off the setlist and into the corners of the songbook the weekend never reaches.
A hundred years of standards is a deep well, and the point of an evening like this is watching someone draw from it live: a request honoured, a key changed mid verse, a tune nobody sings anymore given its evening out. The Piano Bar was built for exactly that, candlelight, close tables and a grand piano that has heard it all before. Come with someone who likes surprises. The set list does not exist until it happens.
