The Night
Tonight is a launch night: Nico Widdowson brings brand new music and his Harlem stride piano to the first room that gets to hear it. Saturday at Alfie's above Greek Street, into the first floor room where the martinis are proper and the piano is a studio grand with history in it. Two houses, 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM, both close enough to watch a pianist's hands change their mind.
The Music
Nico Widdowson won the Musicians' Company Young Jazz Musician of the Year in 2024, a Leeds born pianist who plays 1920s Harlem stride like it never went out of fashion, because in his hands it has not. His trick is treating the oldest piano language in jazz as something dangerous. Fats Waller and Duke Ellington sit inside his playing right next to free improvisation and a working songwriter's sense of mischief, and his debut album, On Fools and Clowns, arrived this summer as an editor's pick in Jazz Journal.
Angela Scott is a real person. She was Nico's landlord, and the tune he wrote about her is the one he played on the night he won a national prize, which may be the most Soho revenge story ever set to music. Tonight he launches it as a single, released this very weekend, in the room where the Club filmed him playing it live. Expect the new material, the stride workouts, and at least one story told from the piano stool. New jazz, launched at arm's length.
