The Night
Tonight winds the clock back a century: the hot jazz of the 1920s on guitar and banjo, vintage swing by candlelight, close enough to watch the fingerpicking. Wednesday is the connoisseur's night at the Piano Bar. The weekend crowd is elsewhere, the candles do more of the work, and the hidden jazz den inside Jack Solomons feels most like what it is: a room a couple of dozen people get to keep secret. Two shows, 6:30 PM and 8:30 PM, cocktails at the kiosk from 6:00 PM.
The Music
Honey Boulton is a Wellington born guitarist and banjo player who fell for the hot jazz of the 1920s and never fell back out. Trained at the New Zealand School of Music and seasoned on London's swing scene, including a stint at the celebrated Kansas Smitty's, he does the thing almost nobody does: he writes his own rags and novelty tunes in the old style, four albums of them and counting, rather than simply revisiting the standards. And on the right night the banjo comes out, and a room full of people who thought they knew what a banjo does discover otherwise.
Vintage Swing by Candlelight is precisely the double act the name promises. The songbook of the jazz age, Charleston stomps, torch songs and gin soaked novelty numbers, delivered with a scholar's ear and a performer's grin, in a room lit exactly the way these tunes were meant to be heard. His latest record was cut with some of London's finest young swing players, so the material now sits somewhere rather lovely: old bones and new blood. A midweek night at the Piano Bar is the Club at its most intimate.
