Tonight the voice takes the room: Riketté Genesis brings her swing era songbook and gypsy jazz fire to Alfie's, one flight up above Greek Street. The martinis are proper, the piano is a studio grand, and the tables sit close enough to catch every aside between songs. Two houses, 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM, and Friday nights here have a habit of selling through. Wear something good and come early.
The Music
Riketté Genesis is Brixton born, raised on reggae, and found jazz in her grandmother's Ella Fitzgerald records, which explains a lot about how she sings: golden age swing with soul underneath. A member of the Soho Live family for over eight years, she has taken that voice from The Piano Bar to The Jazz Cafe, the Southbank Centre and a festival stage in Lagos, and this year Forbes picked her out among the Soho Jazz Festival's highlights. Billie Holiday, Anita O'Day and Sarah Vaughan are the compass points. The delivery, and the wit between numbers, are entirely her own.
Expect the swing era done properly: Django style gypsy jazz, torch songs and the standards her EP Busy Line was built on. On stage, she says, is where she feels most like herself, quirks and all, and the room feels it. Her Piano Bar dates have a habit of selling out, and Alfie's on a Friday goes the same way. The early house suits conversation, the late house gets looser.
