Friday at the Piano Bar has its own temperature. The hidden jazz den inside Jack Solomons runs hotter at the end of the week: candlelight on close tables, the band within reach, and a crowd out to celebrate something even if nobody can say what. Two shows, 6:30 PM and 8:30 PM, cocktails at the kiosk from 6:00 PM. It is a small room on purpose, the kind where you hear the joke between songs and the exact moment a ballad lands. Arrive with time for a first drink before the lights drop.
The Music
Jon Bauer is a Canadian trumpeter and singer who came up through New Orleans, playing in the Grammy winning New Orleans Jazz Orchestra and learning the trade in the city that invented it. These days he splits his time between London and Louisiana, and Soho gets the benefit. He sings the way he plays, warm, unhurried and in the Chet Baker school, a voice made for a room where nobody needs a microphone to be heard. Critics reach for comfort food when they describe the tone. One admirer likened it to honey drizzled over a buttery biscuit. The Club's own talent roster files him under a single word: Legend.
Expect the songbook with a New Orleans twist. Standards you know, taken somewhere slightly more humid, trumpet lines that curl around the melody and vocals that pull the whole room in close. With Jon's original compositions thrown into the mix. Bauer cut his latest session in London with some of the city's best young players, and the material is still warm from the studio, which is exactly when you want to catch it. This is music for the end of a long week, bring someone worth impressing.
