Saturday swing, built from the bottom up: bassist Tom Dring brings his trio to Alfie's, one flight up above Greek Street, for a night of walking lines, piano that answers back and martinis within reach. Two houses, 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM, and Saturdays here have a habit of selling through. Take a seat close enough to watch the hands.
The Music
Tom Dring is a Derby born double bassist who trained at the Royal Academy of Music and plays in the tradition of Ray Brown and Christian McBride: driving walking bass and melodic soloing. He has worked with Alan Barnes, Gilad Atzmon, Soweto Kinch and Dave Stewart, played Ronnie Scott's, the Vortex, the 606, the Barbican and the O2, and has his debut album on the way.
The trio is where he leads from the bass: standards with the bass as likely to carry the melody as to hold the pulse, swing that grows from a whisper to a roar, and the kind of interplay that only happens when three players have spent a lot of nights in small rooms. Club regulars know him from the Piano Bar. This is the bigger stage.
