The Night
The Cocktail Swing Set closes the first week of October the easy way: a Soho jazz star swinging the standards in the hidden jazz den inside Jack Solomons while the kiosk shakes and stirs. Cocktails from 6:00 PM, then two shows at 6:30 PM and 8:30 PM. Candlelight, close tables, and a Friday that starts with a martini.
The Music
The name on the bill is the Piano Bar itself. A star from the Soho Jazz Club roster, picked by the Soho Live Studios producers, takes the swing end of the songbook at close range: Nat Cole tempos, Basie punchlines, Gershwin and Porter at the pace a good cocktail deserves. Some weeks it is a pianist, some weeks a voice with a trio behind it.
The regulars stopped asking who is playing a long time ago. They just book. Expect swing made for drinkers, played by someone who has worked far bigger rooms than this one, which is rather the point. The early show pairs with the first cocktail, the late one with the second.
