Cocktail swing, done properly: Riketté Genesis brings her swing era songbook back to Alfie's, one flight up above Greek Street, where the martinis are shaken hard and the tables sit close enough to catch every aside between songs. Two houses, 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM, and her Friday nights here have a habit of selling through. Order something with a twist, and come early.
The Music
Riketté Genesis is Brixton born, found jazz in her grandmother's Ella Fitzgerald records, and sings golden age swing with soul underneath and a scat that takes no prisoners. A member of the Soho Live family for over eight years, she has taken that voice from the Piano Bar to the Southbank Centre and a festival stage in Lagos, and Forbes picked her out among the Soho Jazz Festival's highlights.
Julie London, Sarah Vaughan and Ella are the compass points: torch songs for the first martini, up tempo swing for the second, and the tunes her EP Busy Line was built on. The wit between numbers is entirely her own. The early house suits conversation, the late house gets looser, and both go the same way on a Friday: full.
