Katy Baker brings the full quartet to Alfie's for a Friday that feels like a supper club with the lights down low: one flight up above Greek Street, martinis within reach, a studio grand and a singer who works the room one table at a time. Two houses, 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM, and Fridays here have a habit of selling through. Take the seats near the front, if you dare.
The Music
Katy Baker trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama and has spent close to two decades running London cabaret from the front: singer, comedian and compère, and one quarter of the 1940s styled vocal group Four Femmes, whom Londonist praised for jazz, swing and cabaret numbers without a bum note between them.
With a quartet behind her the swing songbook gets the full treatment: Fitzgerald and Day, Porter and Coward, the tunes that were always meant to come with a raised eyebrow, and the patter between numbers that has made her one of London's favourite compères. Order the cocktail. She will notice, and approve.
