Pablo Barrios returns to Alfie's with his quartet and a songbook that runs from Havana to Caracas by way of Greek Street. Two houses, 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM, a studio grand, and a Saturday crowd that has learned to book early for this one. The martinis are proper, and the rum is better. Wear something you can move in.
The Music
Venezuelan-born and trained at the Royal College of Music, Pablo Barrios is musical director of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra's Latin Jazz Collective and one of the Club's most requested pianists. He has played Westminster Abbey and the EFG London Jazz Festival, and his A Night in Havana series has made the Piano Bar one of the warmest rooms in Soho on a weeknight.
The Latin Songbook is the slower, sweeter side of his playing alongside the fire: boleros and danzones, Venezuelan joropo, the Latin standards every grandmother in Caracas can sing, and the jazz standards that sound like they were always meant to have a clave underneath. A quartet gives it room to build. The early house is for listening, the late house is for the second round.
