Autumn arrives on Greek Street with a raised eyebrow: Katy Baker brings her trio and her Soho Songbook to Alfie's, one flight up, where the martinis are proper and the tables are close enough for her to catch your eye. Two houses, 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM, and Fridays here have a habit of selling through. Wear something good. She will notice.
The Music
Katy Baker trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama and has spent close to two decades running London cabaret from the front: singer, comedian and compère, and one quarter of the 1940s styled vocal group Four Femmes, whom Londonist praised for jazz, swing and cabaret numbers without a bum note between them. She hosts, she lands the joke, she holds the note.
The Soho Songbook is the golden age with its stockings straightened: Porter and Coward, Fitzgerald and Day, the tunes that were always meant to come with a wink, and an Autumn Leaves or two for the time of year. Her cabaret instincts mean the patter earns its place beside the songs. The early house is for the charm, the late house for the mischief.
