The Night
October opens with a horn: trumpeter Andy Davies brings the Evening Standards back to the hidden jazz den inside Jack Solomons, the songbook out and the kiosk pouring from 6:00 PM. Two shows at 6:30 PM and 8:30 PM, a couple of dozen seats, and a Thursday crowd getting a head start on the weekend.
The Music
Andy Davies is a Welsh trumpeter and a familiar name on the Soho scene, and the Evening Standards is his songbook band: Gershwin, Porter, Berlin and Ellington, the hundred year catalogue that keeps this room in business. He last played the Piano Bar in early September, and the Soho Live Studios producers have booked him straight back.
Played this close, a trumpet has nowhere to hide and nothing to hide from. Expect muted ballads in the early show, open horn in the late one, requests taken when the mood allows, and verses nobody sings anymore. Thursday one flight below Great Windmill Street, with the standards doing the heavy lifting.
