The Night
Remember, remember: on bonfire Saturday the brightest fireworks in Soho go off one flight up above Greek Street. Arran Kent brings his saxophone and clarinet back to Alfie's for a night of bebop lit at both ends. Two houses, 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM, the martinis are proper, and the tempos are not for the faint hearted. Book early and duck when the solos start.
The Music
Arran Kent plays saxophone and clarinet with a bebop vocabulary and an expressive, blues-soaked tone. Musical director of Koko Collective and a regular at both Alfie's and the Piano Bar, he has played jazz festivals across Europe and led Giants of Bebop at Alfie's during Soho Jazz Festival '26. His October Saturday here was the warm up.
Bebop was always the fireworks display of jazz: Parker lines going up like rockets, Gillespie changes crackling overhead, the rhythm section keeping the bonfire lit. Expect it at full burn, with a clarinet feature or two to cool the room between. In a club this size you do not watch the display, you stand right under it.
